NMC Revalidation FAQs for Nurses and Midwives
Welcome to our comprehensive NMC Revalidation FAQ page, designed to help nurses, midwives, and nursing associates navigate the revalidation process smoothly. Below, we address common queries relating to NMC revalidation, providing essential information to ensure you meet the requirements and maintain your professional registration.
What is NMC revalidation?
NMC revalidation is a mandatory process for all registered nurses, midwives, and nursing associates. You must complete it every three years to maintain your registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). This process verifies that you are consistently updating your skills, knowledge, and ensuring safe and effective practice.
When do I need to revalidate?
Revalidation must be completed every three years from your original registration date or your last revalidation. The NMC will notify you 60 days before your revalidation is due. You can confirm your revalidation date by accessing your NMC Online account.
What happens if I miss my revalidation deadline?
If you fail to revalidate on time, your registration will lapse, preventing you from practising as a registered professional. Reapplying for the register is more intricate and costly than the regular revalidation process.
Key Revalidation Requirements
To complete your revalidation, you must provide evidence of:
- 450 practice hours (or 900 hours if you are registered as both a nurse and a midwife)
- 35 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), with at least 20 hours from participatory learning
- 5 written reflective accounts
- 5 pieces of practice-related feedback
- A reflective discussion with another NMC registrant
- A health and character declaration
- An appropriate professional indemnity arrangement
- Confirmation from a designated confirmer
Understanding CPD
Continuing Professional Development encompasses any learning activities that enhance your professional skills and knowledge. Acceptable forms include workshops, courses, conferences, online learning, journal readings, and insights gained from colleagues. Remember, at least 20 hours of your CPD must involve interactive or participatory learning.
About Confirmers
Your confirmer must be a registered nurse, midwife, or nursing associate who has been on the NMC register for a minimum of three years. They can provide a reassuring endorsement for your revalidation portfolio. If you are unable to find a confirmer, you can easily utilise professional confirmation services we offer.
Reflective Account Guidance
Reflective accounts should highlight experiences from your practice that align with the NMC Code. Each account should be approximately 500 words, detailing what occurred, your feelings, what you learned, and its impact on your practice. These reflections need not relate to significant incidents; everyday experiences are equally valuable.
